Spotlight – choosing a university

Your course needs to meet your long term aspirations and choosing the right one can sometimes be a time consuming project. It is important that during this time you make sure you are fully committed to the subject area that you wish to embark on.

Almost 38% of students choose the wrong subject and either to finish the university course or change mid way through the first year at university.

It is important that you can avoid being in this 38% and make sure you are one hundred percent behind your subject area. We have provided a host of advice on our website which includes advice on how to apply to university and in this newsletter we have condensed this into balancing at least four of the areas below:

  • The reputation
  • The people
  • The cost
  • The location
  • The prospects

The first question is what are you going to learn? You must need to want to learn the subjects within the course. At Get Into Uni we recommend writing to the schools to find out what is involved in the course and how this can help you in the future. In regard to reputation, a school’s reputation is important but what you are going to learn is much more important. Look at long term trends rather than short term.

The cost is important as this will be a big investment to your future you must pick the program that matches your skill base rather than just focus on cost. The cost is difficult to determine as living costs will alter geographically. Finally, consider the university prospects in terms of what type of position you are able to gain following completion of your degree. Find out what other graduates are doing and the skills they learnt through the program.

Top tip

Never under any circumstances make up even the smallest item in your personal statement. It may ruin your chances of getting a place at university.
