Psychology - Unedited

I feel that the field of Psychology should and could be instrumental in alleviating some of society's problems if applied correctly. I am interested in gaining a solid education in psychology and political techniques and then working in for the social services to apply what I have to help members of the public.

Something happened when I cracked my first textbook while studying A level Psychology - Something clicked. It was during this time that I took my first Introductory to Psychology course and that is when I fell in love with the subject.

I found that Psychology answered the why questions that arose from studying the how of Political Science. The course exposed me to the thoughts of developmental and social psychologists, and the theories of Community Psychology. I began to read voraciously everything I could get my hands on. I began to apply their whys to my thoughts on policy and law.

I look forward to beginning the next leg of my long and winding road of discovery in university. I plan to continue to combine my interests in Psychology and Political Science by pursuing a dual degree. This will enable me to pursue my professional goal of doing policy work for the government in the fields of education and military issues and maybe even the possibility of teaching at university level.

I recently moved to Manchester shortly after completing my A-levels and began working as a voluntary Homeless Specialist in the summer. Working daily with homeless clients spurred my desire to learn more about our ability to act according to our decisions: many of our clients were substance abusers and some were mentally ill, and yet – every once in a while – a determined individual would request assistance, enter treatment and eventually find his way back into society. Of course, for any one such individual, there were hundreds of others who did not manage to complete the recovery process and succumbed to various urges along the way.

What gives a person the strength to decide to "kick" a drug habit – and then follow through on that decision? What would enable us to make a decision (to allocate more regular time to our family or to stop eating a certain kind of food) and know that we will follow it? How can we truly become our own masters? These questions intrigue me; the degree will help me answer these questions!

Manchester University program is well known, and I would be honoured and excited to attend its program. My Homeless work experience has influenced me greatly in building a foundation on which to build upon in my future studies and gave me guidance to my future career.
